Certified Matchmaker Susan Kates revealed the top 5 mistakes men and women make in dating at a recent information session for women. The women in the audience reacted in shock, horror and disbelief until someone in the audience pulled out her blackberry and read off a similar list written by a reputable relationship coach. Coincidence? Or acute observation?

Kates has been working as a matchmaker for Dinnerworks (now known as THE WORKS) for the past seven years and has seen these mistakes played out many times over.  Kates’ experience in the dating industry has led her to believe the following five mistakes to be the most common:

1. Unrealistic Expectations. Both men and women suffer from this. Who you think you should be with and who you are meeting are not the same.

2. You didn’t feel a “spark” so this is not the one for you. In this world of instant gratification men and women dismiss instantly. It is truly a wonder that we are in relationships at all? This spark thing gets in the way of even trying to get to know someone.

3. Men and women complain about the same thing, the men look shabby and women don’t look feminine. Basically what both sexes are saying is that neither takes pride in their appearance. I would like to relate this to a job interview. Would you go to a job interview not looking your best? Then why do you go on a date not looking your best? Think about it.

4. Stop interviewing each other. What ever happened to just having fun? Men and women go into a date situation and instead of trying to get to know each other they grill each other.

5. Attitude, attitude, attitude. Unfortunately dating has become a chore and so men and women are entering into this with a defeatist attitude. This is not going to work anyway so let me just get through this. Do you think the other person can’t see if you are not in a positive frame of mind? Sorry, but this is not attractive.
